A Message from the Executive Director

Terri Pilarski

Dearborn, Michigan offers its residents with a rich and unique opportunity to experience the beauty and challenges of diversity in cultural, religious, social, political, and interpersonal relationships. Struck by the efforts of the residents of Dearborn and in particular the members of Christ Episcopal Church, for which I was the priest and Rector for twelve years, I recognized the need for an organization to bring together the various groups and individuals for conversation and to work together on common concerns. There is plenty that divides us and causes polarization. It is my belief that there are also plenty of common concerns that we hold and from which we can work together to build a healthier community. The Intercultural Community Center in Dearborn was born with this hope in mind, that it would become a networking hub for nonpartisan social justice action. In the first two years, thanks to the effort, skill, and care of many people, the organization has grown beyond anything I imagined. The ICCD is becoming the place to grow deep, meaningful relationships while working to create the kind of world we all want to live in.

Growth

ICCD was born during the late summer of 2021 from the partnership in faith between English-speaking Christ Episcopal Church Dearborn and Arabic-speaking Mother of the Savior (ELCA-Episcopal church) and from long-standing and new relationships with other groups in the church building and the wider community. The community partners engaged in ICCD (a community coalition and partnership) have grown to include over 30 individuals from more than 20 organizations, and several others have been involved in ICCD action teams and events. The willingness and enthusiasm of these groups and individuals to participate shows their respect and trust in the relationships they find in ICCD. Intercultural communities of this kind are urgently needed in today’s world.
